Having a state title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you?
Waking up and doing some form of self-love is very important to starting the day. It will either start off with Yoga, Meditation, or getting out in nature. Starting your day with self-love can make or break your day! My days consists of volunteering, appearances, photoshoots, planning community outreach activities as well as my day to day work activities. I also spend quality time with my boyfriend, friends and family. Working at a Real Estate Investment company, I have the flexibility to do what I love and love what I do! The joy of being a title holder is every day is different and every day is just as exciting!

What has been the highlight of your reign so far? Meeting some of the most impactful and inspirational women around the USA has been the highlight of my reign. Growing up being bullied by most of the girls in my class, I had an idea of how women behave and didn’t want to be friends with women. It wasn’t until I joined pageantry that I realized that not all women put you down and many of them have your best interest in mind. Empowered women Empower women and I truly believe that pageantry is a true sisterhood to greatness. Even before Nationals, I have met some of the most kind, genuine and empowered individuals. Some of my best friends were from pageantry and I am so thankful to be able to meet the rest of the ladies in Washington DC. Your vibe attracts your tribe!

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? Eating a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables are what keep my skin looking flawless. I do not eat processed foods for many reasons such as the waste it produces, the lack of nutrition and for health. Being natural and rocking your own skin is also very important as it keeps your skin clear and free of chemicals. Being beautiful in your own skin is such an empowering feeling. I personally love myself with makeup but love myself even more without it.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? Bullying has nothing to do with you, it has to do with the other person. Being bullied my whole life, I used to always think there was something wrong with me until I studied cognitive behavior in my 20’s and learned that most people who cause harm to other people is because they are suffering and want to push it on someone else. The best advise I could give would be to give your bullies more love because they truly need it. Stay Strong and keep being you!

Tell us about your platform: Being an Earth Warrior, my job is to protect our beautiful life-giving and life-saving Mother Earth. Coming from Native American Ancestry, I have always felt a deep sense of connection to our Mother Earth and all living things on it. That is why my platform is to encourage others to reduce waste, go vegan, and support their local economy. Americans on average produce 4.4lbs of trash every single day. Animal agriculture is responsible for 91% of the amazon being destroyed and causes 51 billion farm animals to be killed for food, every year, and that does not include sea animals. These are beautiful creatures that are essential to our ecosystem and our oceans. Supporting locals is also very important because it helps put money in your local economy and you help make your community a destination. Reducing waste is something everyone can do. We do not have a world hunger issue, we have a world waste issue.  I teach free monthly zero waste classes, intro to veganism, and host monthly meetups to bring the community together. As a speaker, I was able to reach thousands of people at the 7th annual Health Healing and Happiness conference here in Las Vegas to encourage them to reduce waste, go vegan, and support locals. Working with local and national businesses, leaders and congress, I have been able to make a drastic change in my community.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? One thing you can do right away is use your voice for what you believe in! We have so much power behind our voice and if you are not speaking about something you believe in, your community is missing out. It all depends on what your passion is, but you can host community cleanups, teach a class about something you believe in, reach out to local businesses to host events to raise money for non-profits. My favorite quote from Mother Teresa…” I can do things better than you can…you can do things better than I can…but together we can do great things” If you are not good at planning community outreach activities, find someone in your local community who is and use your talents to help them!

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? Everything I do, I do with love. I do not add anything to my calendar if I am not going to enjoy it. I have come to a point in my life where I do what I love, and I love what I do. During my free time I spend time out in nature. I love hiking, camping, kayaking, grounding, gardening and just being out with our Mother Earth.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Best advice I have ever received was you will always have haters in your life and people who will try and put you down. Be the bigger person and send love their way! Keep being you and never change.

Meet Miss New England Earth United States 2018: Isabella Bennett

Miss New England Earth United States 2018, Isabella Bennett, is an Environmental Activists and Information Technology Apprentice from the beautiful state of Rhode Island. Last year, she was fortunate enough to receive the Beauty for a Cause Award at the 2017 Miss Earth United States Pageant. In her spare time, she serves as Treasurer of the Rhode Island Theatre Educational Association, a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for high school to promote their theatre programs, advocate for theatre education, and feature the work of their talented students.

Hometown: Middletown, Rhode Island
Current city: North Kingstown, Rhode Island
Occupation: Audio Visual Technician & Information Technology Apprentice
Hobbies: Traveling, journaling, baking, performing, and napping.
Favorite food: Macaroni and cheese
Favorite movie: Armageddon
Three words that sum you up: Adventurous, adaptable, open-minded
Song you have on repeat right now: Move Together by James Bay
Dream job: Professional Actress
One thing you can’t live without: Moisturizer
Favorite quote: “Her courage was her crown and she wore it like a Queen.” – Atticus

Having a state title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you? As an Audio Visual Technician for international science conferences, I spend a large portion of the year traveling. I am currently in the process of getting ready to leave for our summer conference season, so things are a little hectic right now. At the moment, a typical weekday for me consists of working 8:00am – 5:00pm at the office, running errands, taking a power nap, having dinner with my family, at least an hour at the gym, daily meditation, and then catching up on emails or watching an episode of Survivor before bed. On the weekends, I try to make at least one appearance as Miss New England Earth United States 2018, visit my friends and extended family because I won’t have the opportunity to see them for a few months, complete both a morning and evening workout, meal prep for the week, and catch up on household chores. Most people find adhering to such a strict schedule to be dull and daunting, but I actually find that it helps to keep me calm when things get chaotic. While I am never opposed to adjusting my plan, overall I tend to have significantly better days when my time is well structured.

What has been the highlight of your reign so far? During Earth Week I had the opportunity to attend the Party for the Planet at the Roger Williams Park Zoo (Providence, Rhode Island) and at Mystic Aquarium (Mystic, Connecticut). Party for the Planet is an annual Earth Day celebration held by more than 130 American Zoo and Aquarium Association-accredited zoos and aquariums across North America. Both Rhode Island and Connecticut public schools were on vacation that week so the facilities were packed with families! Throughout the events, I had the opportunity to speak with guests about endangered species, marine pollution, and recycling. There is something really special about seeing a child’s eyes light up as you talk to them about their favorite animal or something they learned in school about the environment. Helping to cultivate a child’s a love and respect for nature is the most worthwhile thing I have done with my title.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time?
Good skin care is the foundation to every beauty look. The best way to keep your skin looking happy and health is to stay hydrated; beauty starts from within! I also firmly believe that everyone should use a moisturizer. My skincare routine consists of a vitamin c serum, lightweight gel moisturizer, eye cream with spf during the day, gentle charcoal cleanser, night cream, and hydrating eye cream before bed. Skincare products are something I never skimp on when in the beauty aisle. Having worked as a cosmetics associate for a major department store, I can honestly tell you that not all products are created equally. When looking for skincare products, I pay close attention to the ingredients and actively avoid products that contain synthetic colors and fragrances, parabens, phthalates, and sodium lauryl sulfate.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? As someone who has been a victim of bullying, I can tell you first hard that as hard as it may be right now, you will get through this. You are so much stronger than you think. While everyone’s situation is different, it is important for each of you to remember not to isolate yourself. Seek out the people in your life that you can confide in and surround yourself with their optimism and positivity. Never go through this in silence. Your emotions are valid, your thoughts are valid, and there are people who are not only willing to listen but who want to listen. You are not alone.

Tell us about your platform: As any pageant girl will tell you, developing our personal platform is an essential part of this journey for us. Our platform is what drives us; at its core, it is the reason we are competing. I chose to compete in for the title of Miss Earth United States because I believe in the mission of the organization. Their mission to protect and preserve our planet directly aligns with my personal goals and my platform which is “Educate to Advocate”.

One of the things I hear when I talk to people about environmental concerns like climate change and marine pollution is that they don’t know enough about the topic or that they had no idea that these were such big issues. It is impossible for someone to care about something if they are uninformed. This is where education comes into play. Every conversation that you have with someone is an opportunity to teach and to learn. By opening a dialogue, we are enabling ourselves to both share and receive valuable information. Through my volunteer work, I try to talk to as many people as possible about the challenges and threats that our environment is facing. The best way to advocate for our environment is by helping others to develop an understanding of what is happening and why these issues matter. By educating others on the impact that humans have on earth’s delicate ecosystems and the organism that call our planet home, my hope is that I can help to create a greener future for the generations that follow.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? The biggest thing you can do to support my platform and the health of our planet is to start taking an interest in the environment! Take the initiative to learn more about the environmental concerns that your community is facing and how you help to combat these problems on a local level. There are wonderful environmental organizations in every state who have representatives that want to help you learn about challenges your area are facing. Becoming a well-informed citizen is the first step to being able to aid in the protection and preservation our planet!

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? Since we are so close to competition season, I don’t have a lot of free time right now between volunteer work, practicing for the pageant, and training at the gym. When I do get some down time I usually spend it watching Survivor with my family; we are currently in the process of watching every season from start to finish. I also thoroughly enjoy making colored coded charts and spreadsheets. I have the Google Sheets application on my phone and am constantly creating and updating documents to keep myself organized. I find to be very relaxing.

What is the best advice you have ever received? A dear friend and mentor of mine Mr. Robert Shaffer use to recite a famous quote by Dan Montano. It is something that has always stuck with me. “Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

I am very busy! My typical day involves teaching, taking care of my dogs, completing my responsibilities involved in running a non profit organization and being a state title holder. It is a lot of work but I would not have it any other way. Service to my students, community, state and the planet is what gives me purpose. I also make sure to take care of myself as well. Everyday I make time for healthy eating, exercise and relaxation. In order to best serve others we ourselves must first be physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy.

What has been the highlight of your reign so far?
The highlight of my reign so far has been all of the amazing people I have met in my community and all of the wonderful organizations I have been involved with. I have volunteered weekly and I have so much more planned. It feels amazing to be making a positive difference in my community! There truly is joy in service to others. I am very thankful to the Miss Earth United States organization for giving me this amazing opportunity to be an ambassador to environmental protection campaigns.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time?
My best beauty secret is to use cruelty free products! Nothing makes me feel more beautiful than knowing that no animals were harmed in the making of my beauty products.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying?
Seek help! If you are being bullied please talk to a teacher, friend or parent. Please also know that you are not alone. It is impossible to be alone because you are connected to everything around you. I would also like to offer this quote from Scott Stabile as advice: “I wish you knew how normal your feelings are, and how universal your struggle is. You are so not alone. You couldn’t be alone if you tried.”

Tell us about your platform:
My platform is “We Are All Connected.” I want to help people awaken from the illusion of separation and to understand that we are all connected: nature, animals and humanity. We are all Earthlings. Every action we take has an impact on others. It feels great to know that we can live a lifestyle that shows compassion, love and respect for humanity, animals and our planet.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved?
There are easy things that we can do everyday to respect the connection between all life. Reducing single use plastic, recycling, eating vegan meals, saying no to plastic straws and picking up trash are just a few examples. To get more involved in your community, search online or through social media for organizations that have a mission you feel connected to and passionate about. Reach out to organizations and ask what you can do to get involved. Most organizations need volunteers and would love to have your help!

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing?
In my free time I enjoy running a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and volunteering with causes that I am passionate about. I also enjoy trying out new vegan recipes in the kitchen, dining out at restaurants and traveling. I love spending time with my family and loved ones including my two rescue dogs, Baxter and Mama Belle.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice that I have ever received was to research how animals are treated in society. The knowledge that I gained though my research helped me to open up my heart to animals, to truly love and respect them. It feels amazing to live a lifestyle that shows compassion on animals, to know that my everyday choices reflect my core belief of love and respect for all life.

Occupation: University Student/ Model/ Nanny
Hobbies: Singing, Dancing, Art, Volunteering, Running
Favorite food: Tacos
Favorite movie: Raise Your Voice
Three words that sum you up: Unique, Compassionate, Motivated
Song you have on repeat right now: The Girl You Think I Am by Carrie Underwood
Dream job: Miss Earth / Singer
One thing you can’t live without: Music
Favorite quote: Always believe something wonderful is about to happen.

Having a state title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you?
My days contain a balance of workouts, school, work, appearances, and photoshoots, plus I like to enjoy social time as well. The key is to be well-organized and recognize how much you can actually handle in one day without slacking on any of it. Being a student adds a little inconsistency to my schedule, and appearances are on different days and times, so you have to be orderly to make it on time to everything and be well prepared.

What has been the highlight of your reign so far?
The highlight of my reign has honestly been all of the little moments. The smiles on the faces of everyone I encounter, the opportunity to help others and be a part of something so much bigger than myself. I had the opportunity to be a part of the Autism Puzzle Walk in Omaha, NE, to hang out with the families and children. I was brought there to make them smile and bring joy and inspiration to their day, but it turns out that is exactly what they did for me. Seeing their strength and courage, and the utter happiness they get out of life was unbelievable. I want to find that same freedom in life. I had the same type of experience volunteering for Dance Marathon. Children are amazing and we can learn so much from them. These are a couple highlights, out of a multitude more. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work with incredible people who constantly help me grow as an individual.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time?
My best beauty secret is that Natural is Beautiful. For many of the appearances I have done I have worn much more natural looking makeup, no false lashes, and no extensions. I love doing more natural looks because I believe we are all beautiful in our own skin, and I want to show young girls they can be proud of their own natural beauty. This is why I chose to not to wear extensions or false lashes in my Official Headshot as Miss Nebraska Earth 2018. Another quick beauty tip is that less is more with makeup, and to always have translucent powder on hand to help with oil!

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying?
The subject of bullying touches right at home for me. My older sister and I both experienced bullying in JH and High School. It breaks my heart that I have to share my advice, because it means bullying still breaks the hearts and minds of young men and women. My first piece of advice when it comes to bullying is that you make sure your actions are in check. We must always follow the “Golden Rule.” So, even if someone treats you poorly, never let that darkness seep into your own heart and actions. Don’t be afraid to speak to someone about the way you are being treated. People do care, and will help if you let them know what is happening. I promise you are NEVER alone, even though sometimes it feels like it. Remember your worth and value, it will help you stay strong in moments where bullies may try to wear you down. Most importantly I would tell a victim that I truly believe in them and that they are special, worthy, and loved.

Tell us about your platform:
-First of all, my advocacy as an Earth Warrior is to preserve and protect Earth. Earth is truly a gift, and has been taken advantage of for hundreds of years. It is up to us now to work on changing our behavior and working to cleanse the Earth of garbage and damage. These changes will not happen overnight, but the more awareness we spread about recycling, picking up trash, reusable straws, bags, and cups, plant diversity, etc. we can begin to cause multiple ripples and then hopefully a wave of change. Let’s be the difference our Earth needs and the people of Earth need.
-My personal platform is “You Define You.” I came up with this movement to teach men and women all over the world that their circumstances do not have to define them. This is a movement to become extraordinary. We need to dare to dream bigger than we have ever dreamt before, and have the courage to pursue those dreams. We can break out of whatever box we are placed into, either by ourselves or by others, and become the incredible person we are meant to be. It begins with believing in yourself, and recognizing that you are capable of achieving whatever it is that your heart desires. Make the changes necessary and chase after your dreams and goals. Believe in yourself; I believe in you.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved?
Oh my goodness! There are so many simple ways to get involved and help out our Beautiful Earth! First of all, you can make a personal initiative to change. You can recycle, use reusable bags, straws, and cups. These are all small changes that can be made at your own home. Many communities have groups that plant trees or do trash clean-ups. One way to find events is simply by googling events happening in your area or by using the key word search for events on Facebook. For example, Keep Omaha Beautiful and the Arbor Day Foundation both post events on Facebook people can volunteer for or donate funding too. It is truly so easy to get involved, and working as a group makes it so fun too! I would absolutely encourage you to get out in the community and start making a difference. Also, raise awareness through social media about things you learn or ways to help. If you are going to an event, post about it to see if others want to help as well. Let’s get everyone in action, and create a wave of change!
In your free time, what do you enjoy doing?
Free Time? What is Free time? Haha Just kidding!  In my free time I love to travel, go to concerts, read, draw, paint, and most definitely watch movies. I catch up on time with my friends, family, and boyfriend. I love to go fishing, tubing, and boating. Spending time relaxing outdoors is one of my all-time favorite things to do. Also, I love love love to shop. So, when I get the time, I hit the malls and boutiques!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
“You are enough” is probably the most important thing someone has ever said to me. We get so caught up in competition to remember that even without a trophy, crown, sash, or medal we are still so worthy of living an incredible life. We are all beautiful, wonderful, children of God, and he made us exactly who and how we are supposed to be with a purpose. People are constantly telling us the areas we need to improve or do better, so my favorite piece of advice to calm the storm is “you are enough.” Another piece of advice I live by is “Always believe something wonderful is about to happen.” This piece of advice brings an optimistic lens to life.

Leading with Confidence: Zoey Sage, the Hot New Designer We all Need to Follow!

Lady Code had a chance to sit down with a hot new designer on the Miami Scene, Zoey Sage, creator of the clothing line Zoey Reva. At the young age of 21, she has already been featured in big-name magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Women’s Wear Daily. She even participated in the Underground Fort Lauderdale Show where she was the youngest designer alongside renowned designers like Nicole Miller.

Zoey’s shirt was even featured in Vogue!

Early Beginnings

From a young age, Zoey knew she wanted to do something in fashion. Her mother in fact owns a Miami Model Agency, so fashion was coded in her genes. Originally wanting to be a stylist like her fashion inspiration Rachel Zoe, she would help her friends put together their outfits. Along the way, she realized she was tweaking designs, altering the waist and even the colors.

She then decided to design a capsule collection which launched online last year, immediately gaining recognition from Women’s Wear Daily.

Know your girl, know the customer you are targeting.”

Trial and Error

Although her line has gotten major recognition, Zoey had to learn a lot through her mistakes. She started this project on her own, without knowing the market or the clothing industry, quickly realizing that sizing, garments and inventory were all requisite elements of the learning curve. Sage stated it would have been beneficial to have a mentor to show her the ropes. In fact, she now wants to share what she has learned with other young designers saying, “This is 24/7, which is a lot of work. It’s not glamorous, but it is rewarding. The most exciting part is seeing the clothes come to life on a runway or in a photoshoot. It is knowing that you created something.” Other aspiring designers need to know what they will be facing.

Zoey Reva pink romper (2)

Her Success

Zoey is adamant about her vision. She ventured into design knowing exactly what she wanted. Sage states, “Know your girl, know the customer you are targeting.” When asked about her target audience, she says “It’s not about age, it’s about attitude. Our look is targeted to the effortlessly fashion forward. Super chic, very feminine. It can be day or night wear with our transitional pieces.”  Zoey also made it clear that her credibility helped her saying “credibility is everything.” I think we can all agree with that.

Age is NOT a Thing!

Today, it seems like we always acknowledge someone’s age when they achieve success early in their life but in Zoey’s case “age is not a thing”.  When learning that she was the youngest designer at the Underground Fort Lauderdale show, she was genuinely shocked stating, “I’m always the youngest. People assume my age would be an obstacle, it wasn’t. It is all about talent and creativity, not about how old I am.”

Let’s all take a minute to absorb that shall we. Your age shouldn’t be an obstacle or a defining attribute. Zoey is 100% right by saying you are defined by your talent or creativity. It is about your dedication, your work ethic and personality. We should not allow ourselves to be defined by age, height, hair color, degrees or any other external factors that people tend to use to label people.

People assume my age would be an obstacle, it wasn’t. It is all about talent and creativity, not about how old I am.”

Reva design

What’s Next?

The future is bright for this young designer. Currently, the Zoey Reva team is working on their new collection and revamping their social media. “People want to know you. If they relate to you, they like you.” says this quick wit designer. By showcasing who they are through social media outlets, Zoey Reva plans to take the clothing industry by storm. Zoey says that future collections are full of endless possibilities ranging from kids, to swim to commercial. However right now she wants to focus on “this” making it the best that it can be. “What’s the rush?”

Check out this super cute video below:

Happy Earth Day

Hello everyone and Happy Earth Day!

This post is serving as celebration for one of my favorite days, Earth Day, along with you weekly Motivation for Monday!

Today, I had the honor to interview the inspiring Elizabeth Tran, founder of Teens Go Green. It is a non-profit which she started when she was twelve years old as a way to educate the youth about excessive waste production and help them get involved in helping and protecting the environment.

Teens go Green works with one of my favorite non-profit organizations; Clean the World. Elizabeth is partnered with Orange County Environmental Protection Division, and Green Works Orlando. Some of the events which she produces include the pageant Miss Miracle which she recycles pageant trophies which would have been discarded otherwise, along with Eco-friendly fashion shows to raise awareness and help get others involved.

During our interview, Elizabeth shared some of her advice to help others go green which includes:

  1. Being green is more than a trend, it is a lifestyle choice which influences what you wear, what you eat, how you live and interact with the environment.
  2. Elizabeth recommends Unplug electronics that you do not use all day. In fact, 52% of the energy we use is wasted. She suggests unplugging your toaster when you are not using it.
  3. Be consciousness about what you are wearing. Elizabeth was wearing a garment from Consumer Against Toxic Apparel(CATA), an affiliate with Silver Needle and Thread. They make sure that all their clothes are certified organic or made from natural fibers. It helps the environment and even your own health ensuring that are manmade chemicals and toxic do not go into your skin nor the environment. The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to toxins in our environment, including Chromium 6 which is in polluted waters everywhere.

Please watch the video below to be inspired by this wonderful woman.

Remember to check out to learn more about how you can help make a difference in our environment.

Happy Earth Day everyone!

Char ❤

Favorite quote: “Dream big, work hard, and stay humble”

Being Miss Pakistan must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you?  I just got a job as the Media Director for Cricket Council USA, so I will be delivering coverage from cricket games, making documentaries, etc. This was a job I was hoping for since I started college and getting into sports broadcasting. After my day at work, I am usually running errands for the upcoming international pageant I am competing in, in Taiwan next month. Then I go to the gym and work out, and then this weekend I am flying to Philadelphia for a music video with a Pakistani artist. There is always something going on!

What has been the highlight of being Miss Pakistan so farIt was such an incredible feeling to be able to accomplish ONE of biggest goals, to be able to represent a country and I am truly humbled by the opportunity. I competed in this pageant last year but placed second runner up, but I came back harder and stronger because I believe persistence is the key to tackling any of your goals. Knowing that I am going to be competing in Miss Earth 2017 was definitely the highlight after winning Miss Pakistan World.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I never used to drink water, but ever since I started to I have noticed a HUGE difference in my skin hydration.

Growing up, who was your inspiration? My inspiration has always been my mother. She is the strongest, smartest, most supportive woman I know. She came to America with nothing and went to the University of Nebraska and got her Masters in Chemistry. I admire her for how hard she has worked to get to where she is and how much work she puts into our family. She can handle anything thrown at her and she inspires me to be the best person I can be.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? I think a lot of us have been victims of bullying. Bullying is something that the bully him/herself probably have gone through themselves and is a coping mechanism going through tough times. Just remember, YOU are not the problem. We all have to stick together and you shouldn’t go through it in silence, you should always speak to someone about it. I am a believer in women empowerment, and as women we also have to stick together and only then we can can kick butt!

Tell us about your platform: I have been committed to the March of Dimes organization in Florida in which I am an active advocate and volunteer. The March of Dimes is an organization that began the premature research initiative which funds research for the causes of prematurity. I decided to team up with this organization because I had once lost a sibling to prematurity, so I wanted to contribute in any way I can to raise awareness for this cause.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? There are many ways to get involved because we have many charity events that you can volunteer at. We have annual runs and charity auctions for the organization.

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? I don’t get much free time but when I do, I love to spend time with my nieces and nephew, they are everything to me. But if I am not spending that free time with friends or family, I schedule photoshoots because it is something I really do enjoy.

What is your go-to makeup look? I have tried so many name brand foundations and I can’t seem to find one that I love, so I keep going back to my Loreal infallible Pro-Matte. Then I use my go-to concealer which is the Maybelline dark circle eraser (I swear by this one even though its drug store brand). Next I take my Anastasia contour kit and do a quick contour, use my Makeup forever eyeliner, and end it with MAC whirl lipstick. It only takes my 10 minutes.

What is one thing you can’t live without? My family. EveryTHING else can be managed!

What is the hardest part about competing in pageants? The hardest part is trying not to compare yourself to the other smart and beautiful women, but I do not do that anymore because I put out the best version of myself, and pray for the best.

What is the best part about competing in pageants? The best part is meeting so many goal-oriented women and being surrounded by positive energy, that we can relate to. I always make wonderful friends at every single pageant. I love these girls.

What is the best advice you have ever received? This might sound cliché, but it is that if there is something that you are truly passionate about that makes you happy, the best decision for you will always be to pursue it. In our lives, we tend to consider outside factors like what people will think and whether it will stick or not, but at the end of the day your happiness should be your main priority. It is never too late to pursue your dreams. Learn to be comfortable and confident in your own skin and success will follow.

Having a title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you?

As a Territory Manager for an aesthetic device company, I am fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to travel on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Every day is different! I plan my own schedule which allows me to be creative and flexible in where I need to be. For instance, the other day I woke up early in the morning, went to the Conde Nast studio to shoot a live segment for “Ask Me Anything,” then I hopped in a cab to go to a meeting with a customer. After that I went to an orientation to be a part of the Nutrition Education Program for No Kid Hungry. Upon leaving, I received a phone call from another customer who wanted to meet for a late lunch to discuss a deal so I jumped right in my car to head over. After that I finished up the rest of my work on my computer and phone and headed back home to go to the Body Sculpting Class at my gym. There is never a dull moment! I love that there is always something going on in my life. It keeps things interesting and allows me to be a master at balancing everything and finding a way to make it all work.

What has been the highlight of being Miss New Hampshire so far? The highlight so far has been the outpouring amount of love and support that I have received from my family and friends from all over the world. It means everything to me and I’m even more motivated to continue making each and every one of them proud.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I use Burt’s Bees Peach & Willow Bark Deep Pore Scrub every night, followed by the Peter Thomas Roth 24k Gold Mask a few times a week. However, I must say my biggest beauty secret right now is that I have been drinking even more water than usual and have drastically increased my fruit and vegetable intake and have noticed a dramatic change in my skin. It’s glowing! I’m a strong believer in nutrition and fueling your body with the necessary foods that it needs to flourish.

Adele Scala ladycode

What is your go-to makeup look? I love wearing Pur Pressed Mineral Makeup with SPF 15 on my face to even out my skin tone and create a nice base. Then I use my Anastasia contour kit to quickly highlight under my eyes, the center of my forehead and nose. Then I contour my cheek bones and top of my forehead. I use the Anastasia Brow Wiz to define my brows. Then I use a liquid eyeliner on my top lid before putting on my Ardell lashes! I also use an eyeliner pencil under my eyes and mascara on both my top and bottom lashes. I usually leave my lips natural with some Aquaphor to keep them moisturized. It sounds like a lot, but it truly takes me about 10 minutes in the morning to do!

Growing up, who was your inspiration? My father. Everyone says I’m a daddy’s girl and I’m not ashamed to say that is true! I have always looked up to him and admired all of the hard work he put in to provide for his family. He is truly a “Jack of all Trades” and I strive to be the female version of him who wears multiple hats in society today. He has even taught me how to clean a clogged drain, paint a wall, and rip up carpet! He inspires me to want to be a better person. He does everything for everyone and doesn’t ask or need anything in return. Throughout everything, he always has a smile on his face, as do I!

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? Ladies, if you are, or have been a victim of bullying, know that you are not alone! Many of us have been bullied in the past and have been able to overcome the negativity and grow from it. Take everything as a learning experience and make yourself stronger from it. No one can define who you are, except for yourself. Always stay true to your values and never stoop to someone else’s level. Bullying is unacceptable and will never be tolerated by the people who respect themselves and others. We are all here for you if you are a victim of bullying so know that you have a friend in each and every one of us! We should all be empowering one another to embrace our differences and be the best version of ourselves. I’m a strong believer in women empowerment and forming a bond between us that no one can come between or break. Let’s continue making strides to put an end to bullying together!

 adele scala interview

Tell us about your platform: My platform is Hunger and Homelessness. There are millions of individuals in our nation who need our help. I work diligently with food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and churches who all provide services for those in need. Additionally, I have teamed up with No Kid Hungry to be an integral part of their Nutrition Education Program which educates individuals in underprivileged communities on how to stretch their dollar to create healthy meals to feed themselves and their families. I was also a Party Coordinator for Birthday Wishes, Inc., which brings birthday parties to children in homeless shelters. There are numerous organizations that benefit hunger and homelessness in our country and I plan to continue volunteering with them to make a difference and lend a helping hand in my community, state and nation.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? There are many ways that you can get involved with organizations that benefit hunger and homelessness. The first thing you can do is look up the shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens and churches in your area that provide housing and services to these individuals. I also encourage all of you to go on the No Kid Hungry website ( to look up the different volunteer opportunities you can do in your area. Together we can make a difference to end hunger and homelessness in our country!

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? Free time? What is that? Just kidding! I love to be around my family and friends as much as possible. I also enjoy cooking because I find that it relaxes me after a long day.

Adele Scala photo

What is one thing you can’t live without? Water! I drink a lot of it on a daily basis.

What is the hardest part about competing in pageants? Having the confidence to put the best version of yourself out there to be judged. If you’re able to do that, you’ve already won!

What is the best part about competing in pageants? Meeting other women who share in your ambitions and understand your hustle. Most of the women who compete in pageants are all like-minded in wanting to achieve their dreams and do whatever it takes to get there. It’s refreshing and empowering to be around these types of women.

What is the best advice you have ever received? To realize that not everyone is going to understand your passion and the fire that you have inside of you, and that’s okay! Everyone has their own journey in life and it’s important to stay true to who you are and follow your dreams.

Favorite quote: “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, and one for helping others.” -Audrey Hepburn
Having a title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you? A typical day for me is never “typical.” I like to keep things moving and stay busy and I always have something new I am working on. From planning a charity golf tournament to dancing to volunteering there is always something new to keep me busy and that’s how I love it.
What has been the highlight of being Miss South Carolina so far? Since being crowned Miss South Carolina United States, my life has been blessed in so many ways. I have gained new friends and directors that have become like family. Making memories with them this year is something I will cherish forever. The highlight of my year so far aside from that has been all of the incredible people I have been able to meet. I have made connections that have helped spread my platform and raise awareness for special needs youth and that makes my heart smile. Meeting a little girl or student who looks up to you and can learn something from you is what this is all about and I am thankful for each person I have met along the way.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I try to get as much rest as possible but sometimes when you are on the go as much as we are that isn’t always an option. So I have certain products that I use like my Glamoflauge concealer, Bare Minerals bronzer and of course my organic spray tans by Brandi at The Browning Studio always helps me keep a sun kissed glow.
Growing up, who was your inspiration? My inspiration has always been my two younger siblings, Brock and Brantley. Because of my siblings intellectual and physical disabilities, the doctors told my family that they would never walk, talk, or be of normal size or ability. They bring light to my life every single day and have taught me the importance of staying strong, being brave through times of adversity, and living each day to the fullest. This inspired me to create my non-profit organization to raise awareness, funds and hope for children like my siblings. Lindley’s Alliance for Disabled Youth is a constantly growing group of individuals who go above and beyond to promote inclusion and respect for these courageous kids. A few of the most inspirational moments were watching my brother, who was told he would never walk, RUN the 50 yard dash at the Special Olympics and seeing my sister light the torch to kick off this special day among the other 1300 athletes. Seeing them shine and realizing that being a voice for them has truly made a difference in the lives of others makes me very proud.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? Always remember that pulling someone down will never help you reach the top. I created an educational campaign called “Change Your Words, Change The World” to educate young people on the importance of treating people with kindness and respect. It all began one day in middle school when I overheard a boy from my class using hurtful words towards a younger boy – a disabled student sitting at another lunch table with the special education class. The bully was mimicking the boy, grunting to imitate the non-verbal sounds the boy was making and he laughed hysterically as he put on a show in front of all of our classmates. I could feel my cheeks burning and I blinked back tears. As usual, I sat there feeling embarrassed, hurt and confused, alone with my dream that one day the world would be a different place where things like this didn’t happen. But for some reason, on that particular day, something new welled up from deep inside of me and I stood up. “That boy,” I said as calmly as I could, “may be different, but he is my brother and his name is Brock.” From that point forward I made a decision to take a stand against these bullies. Show them that everyone is different in their own way and to treat others how they would want to be treated.
Tell us about your platform: I am the proud sister of two siblings who are considered “different” because of their intellectual and physical disabilities stemming from Fanconi Syndrome. This is why I founded my non-profit organization of Lindley’s Alliance for Disabled Youth. I hand paint “lucky” river rocks into L.A.D.Y. Bugs and customize them in return for donations to my charity. Lindley’s Alliance was chosen as a part of the Nationwide Kay Jeweler’s Open Heart Campaign with Jane Seymour and was featured with one of the founders of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH), Marie Osmond. Since its inception, we have been able to raise over $100,000 through Lindley’s Alliance and the funds raised through my non-profit benefit children with special needs in the community and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the Nation.
miss south carolina united states 2016
What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? There are always different ways to become involved with events in your community. Find something you are passionate about and do some research to see where volunteers may be needed, funds need to be raised, or where you can lend a helping hand. For Lindley’s Alliance, we have events each year that can be found on our website. We are always in need of volunteers to help paint the L.A.D.Y Bugs and create new designs for our donors. Look within your school, church, or other civic organizations to find out how you can make a difference in your community.
In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? Free time is not something that comes around very often so when it does I love to spend time with my friends and family. These are the people who keep me going and who have shaped me into the person that I am today. I love being able to spend a day just relaxing with the people I love most.
What is your go-to makeup look? I LOVE a good smokey eye look. I think its important to always have one staple eye palette that you take everywhere with you. I’m a big fan of signature looks and finding which look suits me best. I love to really make my eyes pop for my fancy evenings and appearances.
lindley mayer sc
What is one thing you can’t live without? My planner. I use my Lily Pulitzer planner each and everyday to keep up with my very busy schedule. I know it is old fashioned to still write things down but it definitely helps keep me organized.
What is the hardest part about competing in pageants? The hardest part about competing in pageants is believing in who you are and trusting your preparation. It is so easy to work yourself up and start comparing yourself to others when you arrive for the competition. I tell girls all of the time that it is not a competition between you and the other girls competing; it is you and yourself. I have finally learned to trust that whatever is supposed to happen will happen and all I can do is work my hardest and give 110% towards my preparation. The rest should just be fun!
What is the best part about competing in pageants? The best part about competing in pageants is the growth that you see as a contestant. I have learned so much about myself and been able to share my passions with so many people along the way. It gives you so many opportunities to make a difference for others while pursuing the career you are passionate about.
miss sc lindley mayer
What is the best advice you have ever received? “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.” Too often we get trapped thinking we have to do things, because that’s what others do or because that’s what’s expected of us! I like to wake up and LOVE what I do. It is important to take ownership for your health, your family, your relationships, but most of all for YOU and what makes you happy!
Keep up with Lindley:
