Leading with Confidence: Zoey Sage, the Hot New Designer We all Need to Follow!

Lady Code had a chance to sit down with a hot new designer on the Miami Scene, Zoey Sage, creator of the clothing line Zoey Reva. At the young age of 21, she has already been featured in big-name magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Women’s Wear Daily. She even participated in the Underground Fort Lauderdale Show where she was the youngest designer alongside renowned designers like Nicole Miller.

Zoey’s shirt was even featured in Vogue!

Early Beginnings

From a young age, Zoey knew she wanted to do something in fashion. Her mother in fact owns a Miami Model Agency, so fashion was coded in her genes. Originally wanting to be a stylist like her fashion inspiration Rachel Zoe, she would help her friends put together their outfits. Along the way, she realized she was tweaking designs, altering the waist and even the colors.

She then decided to design a capsule collection which launched online last year, immediately gaining recognition from Women’s Wear Daily.

Know your girl, know the customer you are targeting.”

Trial and Error

Although her line has gotten major recognition, Zoey had to learn a lot through her mistakes. She started this project on her own, without knowing the market or the clothing industry, quickly realizing that sizing, garments and inventory were all requisite elements of the learning curve. Sage stated it would have been beneficial to have a mentor to show her the ropes. In fact, she now wants to share what she has learned with other young designers saying, “This is 24/7, which is a lot of work. It’s not glamorous, but it is rewarding. The most exciting part is seeing the clothes come to life on a runway or in a photoshoot. It is knowing that you created something.” Other aspiring designers need to know what they will be facing.

Her Success

Zoey is adamant about her vision. She ventured into design knowing exactly what she wanted. Sage states, “Know your girl, know the customer you are targeting.” When asked about her target audience, she says “It’s not about age, it’s about attitude. Our look is targeted to the effortlessly fashion forward. Super chic, very feminine. It can be day or night wear with our transitional pieces.”  Zoey also made it clear that her credibility helped her saying “credibility is everything.” I think we can all agree with that.

Age is NOT a Thing!

Today, it seems like we always acknowledge someone’s age when they achieve success early in their life but in Zoey’s case “age is not a thing”.  When learning that she was the youngest designer at the Underground Fort Lauderdale show, she was genuinely shocked stating, “I’m always the youngest. People assume my age would be an obstacle, it wasn’t. It is all about talent and creativity, not about how old I am.”

Let’s all take a minute to absorb that shall we. Your age shouldn’t be an obstacle or a defining attribute. Zoey is 100% right by saying you are defined by your talent or creativity. It is about your dedication, your work ethic and personality. We should not allow ourselves to be defined by age, height, hair color, degrees or any other external factors that people tend to use to label people.

People assume my age would be an obstacle, it wasn’t. It is all about talent and creativity, not about how old I am.”

Reva design

What’s Next?

The future is bright for this young designer. Currently, the Zoey Reva team is working on their new collection and revamping their social media. “People want to know you. If they relate to you, they like you.” says this quick wit designer. By showcasing who they are through social media outlets, Zoey Reva plans to take the clothing industry by storm. Zoey says that future collections are full of endless possibilities ranging from kids, to swim to commercial. However right now she wants to focus on “this” making it the best that it can be. “What’s the rush?”

Happy Earth Day

Hello everyone and Happy Earth Day!

This post is serving as celebration for one of my favorite days, Earth Day, along with you weekly Motivation for Monday!

Today, I had the honor to interview the inspiring Elizabeth Tran, founder of Teens Go Green. It is a non-profit which she started when she was twelve years old as a way to educate the youth about excessive waste production and help them get involved in helping and protecting the environment.

Teens go Green works with one of my favorite non-profit organizations; Clean the World. Elizabeth is partnered with Orange County Environmental Protection Division, and Green Works Orlando. Some of the events which she produces include the pageant Miss Miracle which she recycles pageant trophies which would have been discarded otherwise, along with Eco-friendly fashion shows to raise awareness and help get others involved.

During our interview, Elizabeth shared some of her advice to help others go green which includes:

  1. Being green is more than a trend, it is a lifestyle choice which influences what you wear, what you eat, how you live and interact with the environment.
  2. Elizabeth recommends Unplug electronics that you do not use all day. In fact, 52% of the energy we use is wasted. She suggests unplugging your toaster when you are not using it.
  3. Be consciousness about what you are wearing. Elizabeth was wearing a garment from Consumer Against Toxic Apparel(CATA), an affiliate with Silver Needle and Thread. They make sure that all their clothes are certified organic or made from natural fibers. It helps the environment and even your own health ensuring that are manmade chemicals and toxic do not go into your skin nor the environment. The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to toxins in our environment, including Chromium 6 which is in polluted waters everywhere.

Please watch the video below to be inspired by this wonderful woman.

Remember to check out www.teensgogreenglobal.org to learn more about how you can help make a difference in our environment.

Happy Earth Day everyone!

She is committed to the March of Dimes Organization in Florida in which she is an active advocate and volunteer. Ramina is on the path to fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an actress. She also wants to be an advocate for changing the way people think, by showing her supporters what it is to be a modern woman, and appreciate the Pakistani culture while still becoming successful in the world of film, fashion, and modeling. Ramina is striving to open the minds of people with conservative backgrounds, such as her heritage, and she appreciates her platform because it gives her the ability to spread her message!

Quick facts…
Hometown: Karachi, Pakistan
Current City: Sunrise, Florida
Hobbies: Traveling, exercising, modeling
Favorite food: all food 😀
Favorite movie: Bridesmaids
Three words that sum you up: Goofy, Ambitious, Loving
Song you have on repeat right now: Koshish- Teddi Pagg
Dream job: Actress
Beauty product you can’t live without: Concealer
Favorite quote: “Dream big, work hard, and stay humble”

Being Miss Pakistan must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you?  I just got a job as the Media Director for Cricket Council USA, so I will be delivering coverage from cricket games, making documentaries, etc. This was a job I was hoping for since I started college and getting into sports broadcasting. After my day at work, I am usually running errands for the upcoming international pageant I am competing in, in Taiwan next month. Then I go to the gym and work out, and then this weekend I am flying to Philadelphia for a music video with a Pakistani artist. There is always something going on!

What has been the highlight of being Miss Pakistan so farIt was such an incredible feeling to be able to accomplish ONE of biggest goals, to be able to represent a country and I am truly humbled by the opportunity. I competed in this pageant last year but placed second runner up, but I came back harder and stronger because I believe persistence is the key to tackling any of your goals. Knowing that I am going to be competing in Miss Earth 2017 was definitely the highlight after winning Miss Pakistan World.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I never used to drink water, but ever since I started to I have noticed a HUGE difference in my skin hydration.

Growing up, who was your inspiration? My inspiration has always been my mother. She is the strongest, smartest, most supportive woman I know. She came to America with nothing and went to the University of Nebraska and got her Masters in Chemistry. I admire her for how hard she has worked to get to where she is and how much work she puts into our family. She can handle anything thrown at her and she inspires me to be the best person I can be.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? I think a lot of us have been victims of bullying. Bullying is something that the bully him/herself probably have gone through themselves and is a coping mechanism going through tough times. Just remember, YOU are not the problem. We all have to stick together and you shouldn’t go through it in silence, you should always speak to someone about it. I am a believer in women empowerment, and as women we also have to stick together and only then we can can kick butt!

Tell us about your platform: I have been committed to the March of Dimes organization in Florida in which I am an active advocate and volunteer. The March of Dimes is an organization that began the premature research initiative which funds research for the causes of prematurity. I decided to team up with this organization because I had once lost a sibling to prematurity, so I wanted to contribute in any way I can to raise awareness for this cause.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? There are many ways to get involved because we have many charity events that you can volunteer at. We have annual runs and charity auctions for the organization.

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? I don’t get much free time but when I do, I love to spend time with my nieces and nephew, they are everything to me. But if I am not spending that free time with friends or family, I schedule photoshoots because it is something I really do enjoy.

What is your go-to makeup look? I have tried so many name brand foundations and I can’t seem to find one that I love, so I keep going back to my Loreal infallible Pro-Matte. Then I use my go-to concealer which is the Maybelline dark circle eraser (I swear by this one even though its drug store brand). Next I take my Anastasia contour kit and do a quick contour, use my Makeup forever eyeliner, and end it with MAC whirl lipstick. It only takes my 10 minutes.

What is one thing you can’t live without? My family. EveryTHING else can be managed!

What is the hardest part about competing in pageants? The hardest part is trying not to compare yourself to the other smart and beautiful women, but I do not do that anymore because I put out the best version of myself, and pray for the best.

What is the best part about competing in pageants? The best part is meeting so many goal-oriented women and being surrounded by positive energy, that we can relate to. I always make wonderful friends at every single pageant. I love these girls.

What is the best advice you have ever received? This might sound cliché, but it is that if there is something that you are truly passionate about that makes you happy, the best decision for you will always be to pursue it. In our lives, we tend to consider outside factors like what people will think and whether it will stick or not, but at the end of the day your happiness should be your main priority. It is never too late to pursue your dreams. Learn to be comfortable and confident in your own skin and success will follow.

Having a title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you?

As a Territory Manager for an aesthetic device company, I am fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to travel on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Every day is different! I plan my own schedule which allows me to be creative and flexible in where I need to be. For instance, the other day I woke up early in the morning, went to the Conde Nast studio to shoot a live segment for “Ask Me Anything,” then I hopped in a cab to go to a meeting with a customer. After that I went to an orientation to be a part of the Nutrition Education Program for No Kid Hungry. Upon leaving, I received a phone call from another customer who wanted to meet for a late lunch to discuss a deal so I jumped right in my car to head over. After that I finished up the rest of my work on my computer and phone and headed back home to go to the Body Sculpting Class at my gym. There is never a dull moment! I love that there is always something going on in my life. It keeps things interesting and allows me to be a master at balancing everything and finding a way to make it all work.

What has been the highlight of being Miss New Hampshire so far? The highlight so far has been the outpouring amount of love and support that I have received from my family and friends from all over the world. It means everything to me and I’m even more motivated to continue making each and every one of them proud.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I use Burt’s Bees Peach & Willow Bark Deep Pore Scrub every night, followed by the Peter Thomas Roth 24k Gold Mask a few times a week. However, I must say my biggest beauty secret right now is that I have been drinking even more water than usual and have drastically increased my fruit and vegetable intake and have noticed a dramatic change in my skin. It’s glowing! I’m a strong believer in nutrition and fueling your body with the necessary foods that it needs to flourish.

Adele Scala ladycode

What is your go-to makeup look? I love wearing Pur Pressed Mineral Makeup with SPF 15 on my face to even out my skin tone and create a nice base. Then I use my Anastasia contour kit to quickly highlight under my eyes, the center of my forehead and nose. Then I contour my cheek bones and top of my forehead. I use the Anastasia Brow Wiz to define my brows. Then I use a liquid eyeliner on my top lid before putting on my Ardell lashes! I also use an eyeliner pencil under my eyes and mascara on both my top and bottom lashes. I usually leave my lips natural with some Aquaphor to keep them moisturized. It sounds like a lot, but it truly takes me about 10 minutes in the morning to do!

Growing up, who was your inspiration? My father. Everyone says I’m a daddy’s girl and I’m not ashamed to say that is true! I have always looked up to him and admired all of the hard work he put in to provide for his family. He is truly a “Jack of all Trades” and I strive to be the female version of him who wears multiple hats in society today. He has even taught me how to clean a clogged drain, paint a wall, and rip up carpet! He inspires me to want to be a better person. He does everything for everyone and doesn’t ask or need anything in return. Throughout everything, he always has a smile on his face, as do I!

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? Ladies, if you are, or have been a victim of bullying, know that you are not alone! Many of us have been bullied in the past and have been able to overcome the negativity and grow from it. Take everything as a learning experience and make yourself stronger from it. No one can define who you are, except for yourself. Always stay true to your values and never stoop to someone else’s level. Bullying is unacceptable and will never be tolerated by the people who respect themselves and others. We are all here for you if you are a victim of bullying so know that you have a friend in each and every one of us! We should all be empowering one another to embrace our differences and be the best version of ourselves. I’m a strong believer in women empowerment and forming a bond between us that no one can come between or break. Let’s continue making strides to put an end to bullying together!

 adele scala interview

Tell us about your platform: My platform is Hunger and Homelessness. There are millions of individuals in our nation who need our help. I work diligently with food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and churches who all provide services for those in need. Additionally, I have teamed up with No Kid Hungry to be an integral part of their Nutrition Education Program which educates individuals in underprivileged communities on how to stretch their dollar to create healthy meals to feed themselves and their families. I was also a Party Coordinator for Birthday Wishes, Inc., which brings birthday parties to children in homeless shelters. There are numerous organizations that benefit hunger and homelessness in our country and I plan to continue volunteering with them to make a difference and lend a helping hand in my community, state and nation.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? There are many ways that you can get involved with organizations that benefit hunger and homelessness. The first thing you can do is look up the shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens and churches in your area that provide housing and services to these individuals. I also encourage all of you to go on the No Kid Hungry website (www.nokidhungry.com) to look up the different volunteer opportunities you can do in your area. Together we can make a difference to end hunger and homelessness in our country!

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? Free time? What is that? Just kidding! I love to be around my family and friends as much as possible. I also enjoy cooking because I find that it relaxes me after a long day.

Adele Scala photo

What is one thing you can’t live without? Water! I drink a lot of it on a daily basis.

What is the hardest part about competing in pageants? Having the confidence to put the best version of yourself out there to be judged. If you’re able to do that, you’ve already won!

What is the best part about competing in pageants? Meeting other women who share in your ambitions and understand your hustle. Most of the women who compete in pageants are all like-minded in wanting to achieve their dreams and do whatever it takes to get there. It’s refreshing and empowering to be around these types of women.

 adele scala vizcaya swimwear

What is the best advice you have ever received? To realize that not everyone is going to understand your passion and the fire that you have inside of you, and that’s okay! Everyone has their own journey in life and it’s important to stay true to who you are and follow your dreams.

Song you have on repeat right now: “Time of My Life” -Dirty Dancing
Dream job: Play Audrey Hepburn in a remake of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Beauty product you can’t live without: Bare Minerals bronzer
Favorite quote: “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, and one for helping others.” -Audrey Hepburn
Having a title must keep you pretty busy! What is a typical day like for you? A typical day for me is never “typical.” I like to keep things moving and stay busy and I always have something new I am working on. From planning a charity golf tournament to dancing to volunteering there is always something new to keep me busy and that’s how I love it.
What has been the highlight of being Miss South Carolina so far? Since being crowned Miss South Carolina United States, my life has been blessed in so many ways. I have gained new friends and directors that have become like family. Making memories with them this year is something I will cherish forever. The highlight of my year so far aside from that has been all of the incredible people I have been able to meet. I have made connections that have helped spread my platform and raise awareness for special needs youth and that makes my heart smile. Meeting a little girl or student who looks up to you and can learn something from you is what this is all about and I am thankful for each person I have met along the way.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I try to get as much rest as possible but sometimes when you are on the go as much as we are that isn’t always an option. So I have certain products that I use like my Glamoflauge concealer, Bare Minerals bronzer and of course my organic spray tans by Brandi at The Browning Studio always helps me keep a sun kissed glow.
Growing up, who was your inspiration? My inspiration has always been my two younger siblings, Brock and Brantley. Because of my siblings intellectual and physical disabilities, the doctors told my family that they would never walk, talk, or be of normal size or ability. They bring light to my life every single day and have taught me the importance of staying strong, being brave through times of adversity, and living each day to the fullest. This inspired me to create my non-profit organization to raise awareness, funds and hope for children like my siblings. Lindley’s Alliance for Disabled Youth is a constantly growing group of individuals who go above and beyond to promote inclusion and respect for these courageous kids. A few of the most inspirational moments were watching my brother, who was told he would never walk, RUN the 50 yard dash at the Special Olympics and seeing my sister light the torch to kick off this special day among the other 1300 athletes. Seeing them shine and realizing that being a voice for them has truly made a difference in the lives of others makes me very proud.
 lindley mayer south carolina
Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? Always remember that pulling someone down will never help you reach the top. I created an educational campaign called “Change Your Words, Change The World” to educate young people on the importance of treating people with kindness and respect. It all began one day in middle school when I overheard a boy from my class using hurtful words towards a younger boy – a disabled student sitting at another lunch table with the special education class. The bully was mimicking the boy, grunting to imitate the non-verbal sounds the boy was making and he laughed hysterically as he put on a show in front of all of our classmates. I could feel my cheeks burning and I blinked back tears. As usual, I sat there feeling embarrassed, hurt and confused, alone with my dream that one day the world would be a different place where things like this didn’t happen. But for some reason, on that particular day, something new welled up from deep inside of me and I stood up. “That boy,” I said as calmly as I could, “may be different, but he is my brother and his name is Brock.” From that point forward I made a decision to take a stand against these bullies. Show them that everyone is different in their own way and to treat others how they would want to be treated.
Tell us about your platform: I am the proud sister of two siblings who are considered “different” because of their intellectual and physical disabilities stemming from Fanconi Syndrome. This is why I founded my non-profit organization of Lindley’s Alliance for Disabled Youth. I hand paint “lucky” river rocks into L.A.D.Y. Bugs and customize them in return for donations to my charity. Lindley’s Alliance was chosen as a part of the Nationwide Kay Jeweler’s Open Heart Campaign with Jane Seymour and was featured with one of the founders of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH), Marie Osmond. Since its inception, we have been able to raise over $100,000 through Lindley’s Alliance and the funds raised through my non-profit benefit children with special needs in the community and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the Nation.
miss south carolina united states 2016
What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? There are always different ways to become involved with events in your community. Find something you are passionate about and do some research to see where volunteers may be needed, funds need to be raised, or where you can lend a helping hand. For Lindley’s Alliance, we have events each year that can be found on our website. We are always in need of volunteers to help paint the L.A.D.Y Bugs and create new designs for our donors. Look within your school, church, or other civic organizations to find out how you can make a difference in your community.
In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? Free time is not something that comes around very often so when it does I love to spend time with my friends and family. These are the people who keep me going and who have shaped me into the person that I am today. I love being able to spend a day just relaxing with the people I love most.
What is your go-to makeup look? I LOVE a good smokey eye look. I think its important to always have one staple eye palette that you take everywhere with you. I’m a big fan of signature looks and finding which look suits me best. I love to really make my eyes pop for my fancy evenings and appearances.
lindley mayer sc
What is one thing you can’t live without? My planner. I use my Lily Pulitzer planner each and everyday to keep up with my very busy schedule. I know it is old fashioned to still write things down but it definitely helps keep me organized.
What is the hardest part about competing in pageants? The hardest part about competing in pageants is believing in who you are and trusting your preparation. It is so easy to work yourself up and start comparing yourself to others when you arrive for the competition. I tell girls all of the time that it is not a competition between you and the other girls competing; it is you and yourself. I have finally learned to trust that whatever is supposed to happen will happen and all I can do is work my hardest and give 110% towards my preparation. The rest should just be fun!
What is the best part about competing in pageants? The best part about competing in pageants is the growth that you see as a contestant. I have learned so much about myself and been able to share my passions with so many people along the way. It gives you so many opportunities to make a difference for others while pursuing the career you are passionate about.
miss sc lindley mayer
What is the best advice you have ever received? “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.” Too often we get trapped thinking we have to do things, because that’s what others do or because that’s what’s expected of us! I like to wake up and LOVE what I do. It is important to take ownership for your health, your family, your relationships, but most of all for YOU and what makes you happy!

This past weekend was a life-changing experience for me. I had the opportunity to attend the FARE National Food Allergy Conference in Orlando. While I was there, I met the inspiring Allie Bahn, otherwise known as Miss Allergic Reactor.

Allie Bahn

Allie has personal life-threatening allergies and speaks to those facing similar challenges, teaching them about how to deal with their food allergies and how to thrive in an otherwise difficult food environment.  During her senior year of college, Allie conducted a study program on children with food allergies. Her findings revealed that parents are afraid to allow their children to go out without them for fear that their children would ingest something they were allergic to and have a fatal reaction. This is what inspired Allie to travel the country teaching children how to live an independent and safe lifestyle.

Some of her tips include always carrying an epipen to treat emergency allergic reactions and being prepared for anything. This means planning ahead. She doesn’t want those with allergies to feel inhibited from doing what they want to do.  Allie’s parents recognized the need for her independence and chose the motto “Let’s find a way to make it happen,” words she shares with all parents today.  Living by these words Allie has traveled throughout Italy and Australia bringing her own food in case she can’t readily find safe food. She always brings a chef card, a card with her allergies translated into the official language of the country.

Today, Allie is a licensed Elementary School Teacher in the Boston school district.  You can check out my interview with Allie below.

Remember to visit her website http://www.missallergicreactor.com/ and like her page on Facebook.

Keep checking back every Wednesday for more interviews from FARE.

Happy Wellness Wednesday everyone.

Meet Kelly Seibold: Miss Virginia United States 2016

Sometimes, we have so much in common with someone it’s scary! Kelly and I went to to same university, we’re both half Japanese, and we both model and compete in beauty pageants! I met Kelly in 2013 during my sorority recruitment, which was around the same time that I was starting my business, Vizcaya Swimwear. She ended up modeling my VERY first Vizcaya Swimwear collection in 2013! It’s so crazy how far we both have come since that time, but I am so happy that she just won the title of Miss Virginia United States 2016! Of course I had to interview this beauty queen so that you can learn more about your reigning Virginia queen.

Quick facts…

Hometown: Fairfax, VA

Current City: Richmond, VA

Career:Elementary School Teacher

Three words that sum you up: passionate, upbeat, creative

Song you have on repeat right now: This is what you came for – Calvin Harris

Dream job: Event Planner

Beauty product you can’t live without: Beauty Blender

Favorite quote: “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.” -Dr. Seuss

What projects do you have going on at the moment? I am currently wrapping up my first semester of graduate school and am excited to continue giving back to my community.  This month I will be assisting my local church in raising funds for the Central Union Mission in Washington D.C.. I am looking forward to attending the Miss District of Columbia United States Pageant and making other appearances throughout the year

What are you looking forward to the most during your reign? I am very excited to be competing this August in Las Vegas, as it will be my first time visiting. What I look forward to most is being able to use my title to bring awareness to issues and causes that are overlooked. By the end of my reign I hope to have made a considerable impact in my community and society as a whole.

How did you get involved in pageantry? I originally got involved with pageantry by trying to earn scholarship money for college. Growing up in a single parent household, it was important that I try to burden the financial load. Pageantry has given me the confidence I need to use my voice to help others. That and all the glamour have me hooked!

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I am obsessed with coconut oil. I use it for hair treatments, make-up removal, moisturizing, and even teeth whitening! It has so many benefits and is 100% organic.

Growing up, who was your inspiration? Other than my mother, Audrey Hepburn has always inspired me. Not only was she a beautiful and talented actress, she used her fame to give back to the community. She has taught me to always hold myself with poise and grace.

What are some challenges that you faced on your journey to success, and how did you overcome them? I have definitely faced backlash from my peers about pursuing my dreams. When it comes to pageantry people are very quick to put me down and say I am not good enough. I have grown to focus on those who support me and keep reaching for my dreams. One of the first things I am told when I say I want to be a teacher is, “You better find a rich husband”. If I chose a profession for money I would not choose this. If I chose a profession with the biggest pay out, teaching is the one for me. The number of young minds I will impact that will shape the future is the biggest pay out a job can have.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? I am really fond of Dr. Seuss quotes and he once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” I think it is important for people to be true to themselves and be comfortable in their own skin. I know it can be difficult and there are people who struggle through their own self love and put others down to try and fix that void. Reaching out to friends and family can be a great way to persevere.

Tell us about your platform: My platform is the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.  I believe that in the unfortunate event any child needs medical care that they are given the best care possible in a welcoming and comforting environment. Going through such an adverse time I feel that the families should not worry about the financial hardships that can come with such care. The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is able to provide top of the line care without the big price tag, thanks to the help of donations.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? My advice for them is to just get out there! There are opportunities everywhere to give back to the community and get involved. It could be the local food bank, homeless shelter, boys and girls club, or nearby church. There is always something going on and extra helping hands are always welcome.

kelly siebold

Can you tell us about your 5 year plan? In five years I will have completed my Master’s degree and hope to be teaching the young minds of our future. I also hope to go back to school for my Doctorate. I want to eventually get into school administration so that I can further impact the education system.

What is the best advice you have ever received? The best advice came from my favorite Youtube Star, Zach Anner.  He is an actor, a comedian, and has cerebral palsy. In one video he climbs a mountain and in the end he states, “What ever Mountain you have to climb, bring your friends, and bring your knee pads.” This really spoke to me because is important to keep a close group of positive influences in your life that help build you up and get over the rough patches.

You need your kneepads to help prepare yourself for the bumps in the road to your dreams.

What projects do you have going on at the moment? I was recently accepted into Regent University. So I am going to school for a MA in Organizational Leadership. I’m a community economic development intern at a local oil & gas corporation. And I am actively promoting my platform via facebook and of course working it as Miss Alaska.

What are you looking forward to the most during your reign? I am honestly most excited to see young ladies discover their beauty, identity & purpose in life. It’s so exciting and beautiful when you can be a part of someone having that “ah-ha” moment. That and TRAVELING.

What has been the highlight of being Miss Alaska so far? The highlight of my Miss Alaska reign has been the overflowing amount of support from people across the entire state of Alaska that I have volunteered, worked or gone to school with in my life.

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? I think outside of AGUA, my biggest beauty secret is having CONFIDENCE in my personal beauty & identity as a woman. When you are confident in your own type of beauty & your identity, you invest in yourself & you begin to inspire those around you to do the same.

Growing up, who was your inspiration? My parents were my inspiration. When I was 6, they adopted me and went out of their way to inspire me to discover my personal, cultural, and godly identity & purpose. Their passion for loving & giving me a family [despite what I had been throuh] inspired me  to do the same for the people around me.

What are some challenges that you faced on your journey to success, and how did you overcome them? I have faced and overcome PTSD, depression & anxiety from trauma caused by sexual assault & domestic violence. It was seriously so hard – physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Honestly, I surrounded myself with people that would encouraged and prayed for me me in each of those areas. I set out on a journey to discover an immovable and unshakable foundation/definition of my beauty, identity, and purpose. Once I discovered that, I’ve been literally unstoppable. In 2012, I started to share the message of hope to overcome as the Miss World Eskimo Indian Olympics across Alaska; then traveled to Hawaii, Brazil & New Zealand. You can’t stop a woman that knows WHO she is, WHERE she’s going & HOW she’s going to pour LIFE into other women.

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? YES! My advice is to remember that hurt people hurt people. You are flawless and you have a purpose. So believe in yourself, because if you’re convinced, NOTHING can stop you from overcoming.

Tell us about your platform: My platform “Dare to Be Darling” encourages, inspires and empowers women to discover their beauty, identity and purpose so they can overcome the things that make them feel flawed and unworthy of being called “Darling”. For Darling, I have hosted workshops, dinners, spa nights for ladies in Alaska, Hawaii & Auckland, New Zealand. And I have a Facebook page that focuses specifically on inspiring women in beauty, purpose & identity.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? Well, there are so many places regardless of where you live that can use your help on so many levels: hanging up flyers, putting together packages, cleaning, workshops, etc. Gather a couple friends and decide once or twice a month you’ll volunteer in your community. You won’t regret it!

Can you tell us about your 5 year plan? Sure! My 5 year plan includes obtaining an MA in Organizational Leadership, starting  my own business, getting more involved in pageants, getting married ❤ and of course loving life.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Always go the route of LOVE – in the end, you’ll regret being rude, impatient, unforgiving, etc. but you won’t regret loving someone who is completely undeserving of it.  – my mom.

What projects do you have going on at the moment? May is definitely a busy month for me! I will be making all sorts of appearances and participating in many community service events. I will also be attending the Miss California and Texas United States pageants to support all the contestants!

What are you looking forward to the most during your reign? There is so much to look forward to this upcoming year! I desire to make an impact in my community, so I am looking forward to the numerous appearances and community service events that I have lined up. Nevada is home to an array of amazing non-profit organizations and charitable causes, so I have an abundance of opportunities to serve. I am also excited to spend my reign with my fabulous sister queens and the incredible staff of the Miss Nevada United States Pageant. Lastly, I am thrilled about this year’s national pageant, especially since it will be held in Las Vegas! I cannot wait to meet the other state titleholders and compete for Miss United States.

What has been the highlight of being Miss Nevada so far? Since being crowned, these past two weeks have been a whirlwind; my life has flipped upside down, but in the best way possible! It is hard for me to choose the highlight of my reign so far because this entire experience has been absolutely wonderful. I enjoy it all!

 ashlee nelson photo

What are some of your best beauty secrets to looking flawless all the time? Spray tanning is the best way to instantly get a sunkissed glow without the harmful effects of tanning beds and UV sun exposure. I love them! Also, I try to use a coffee facial scrub every other night before I go to bed. The scrub serves as an exfoliator, improves circulation, reduces eye puffiness, and smoothes skin.

Growing up, who was your inspiration? Besides my mom, I really admired Walt Disney growing up! I am a HUGE Disney fanatic, so I was (and still am) completely captivated by his profound influence. He has inspired me to never give up and have the courage to keep moving forward, despite difficult times and opposition from those who doubt me. It is because of Walt that I dare to dream big, embrace my imagination, and believe in the magic.

What are some challenges that you faced on your journey to success, and how did you overcome them? My journey to success has been a continuous road of personal growth and improvement. I strive to be positive and view every challenge as an opportunity to grow. I recognize the importance of staying true to myself, remaining in my faith, and never forgetting where I come from.

miss nevada united states 2016

Lady Code has a focus on anti-bullying and women empowerment. Do you have any advice for our readers who may be victims of bullying? For the past two years, I have had the privilege to conduct a number of classroom, library, and community presentations on behalf of B.R.A.V.E., a national anti-bullying campaign, which denotes Building Respect and Values for Everyone. An important point that I make during these presentations is that although people can be mean and treat you poorly, it is important to always take the high road and not engage in their negative behavior. The unfavorable things that others say and do to you will reveal a lot about their character, not yours. As hard as it may be, always strive to do the right thing and be the bigger person; you will ultimately be rewarded!

Tell us about your platform. The title of Miss Nevada United States allows me the opportunity to promote my continued advocacy of self-esteem among young women. When people believe they are valuable and important, they take good care of themselves; they recognize that unconditional self-love is the core to a peaceful mind. With that said, I want to encourage those who are struggling with low self-esteem to embrace their individuality, never settle for less, make good decisions, and find ways to enhance their value rather than break it down. I hope to help young women across the state realize their full potential, create a positive life vision for themselves, and access the resources they need to achieve their goals.

What can Lady Code readers do in their communities to get involved? I think it is so important for each of us to be an active citizen. Every little bit does help, so do not be afraid to ask around and figure out where you can be most helpful in your local community. Active citizenship can be as small as a campaign to clean up your neighborhood or as big as being a board member for a charitable cause. I believe that community involvement is crucial to be successful in life. It helps you improve lives, connect with others, and strengthen communities. Most importantly, you gain the intangible benefits of accomplishment, satisfaction, and pride. It warms your heart to know that you are giving back!

ashlee nelson

Can you tell us about your five year plan? In five years, I will have graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Marketing. I hope to be pursuing a career in public relations while working on my Master’s degree. Additionally, I aspire to travel more, model in New York Fashion Week, and continue to serve as an active member of my community.

What is the best advice you have ever received? From a young age, my parents, along with my faith, instilled in me the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I hold true to this principle and keep it at the forefront of my moral compass.
