Buying and Selling Apps: Poshmark vs. Mercari

Hi girls!

By now most of you are probably familiar with selling your gently used goods on your phone through apps like Poshmark or Mercari. These apps help you earn extra cash by selling and promoting your used goods to customers all over the country! There are tons of apps like these out there, but the most popular ones are by far Poshmark, and now the new Mercari app. Since my wardrobe changes so frequently, I LOVE buying and selling on these apps and they are my go-to when I’m looking to buy certain things, or get rid of something fast. After using these apps to buy and sell, I’m going to weigh the pro’s and cons of both apps for you ladies!

POSHMARK PROS:

  • Catered toward women only
  • Specific niche: Primarily for buying and selling women’s fashion
  • You can negotiate prices by making an offer/counteroffer
  • Items are protected by Poshmark’s guarantee: Get the item you ordered in its described condition, or get your money back
  • Very simple and easy to use
  • Tried and tested, and one of the first apps of its kind
  • Recieve invites to attend Poshmark parties and events in your area
  • When you search for an item on the app to purchase, it automatically filters the search to only show items in your size
  • I’ve earned tons of extra cash selling my gently used clothing on this app
  • Poshmark sends you a shipping label when you sell an item
  • Poshmark hosts in-app parties to help you sell items
  • Poshmark offers incentives to help you sell such as discounted shipping, notifications for likes, comments, etc.
  • Earn $5 when you first sign up using code: HSNQH

POSHMARK CONS:

  • When selling, Poshmark takes a HEFTY commission: 20%!!! [[This is a HUGE CON!]]
  • When buying, shipping costs $4.99 added to your purchase

MERCARI PROS:

  • Mercari is currently NOT taking ANY commission off your sales while it is in beta! Yay!
  • You can buy and sell anything from electronics to clothing
  • You can choose to pay for shipping or charge the customer for shipping
  • Purchases are protected by Mercari’s guarantee: Receive the item in its described condition or get your money back
  • Mercari send you a shipping label when you sell an item

MERCARI CONS:

  • You can’t negotiate prices unless you do it through the comments section and ask the seller to lower the price
  • App its a little confusing and cluttered to use
  • It caters to a very BROAD market, which means that there are people selling all kinds of things on the app, making it hard to find what you are looking for
  • I have only made one sale from this app

To wrap it up, I think that Mercari has a LOT of potential and it is a perfect fit for men, and women selling things other than clothing. If you are selling clothes, shoes, handbags, or accessories, Poshmark is definitely the way to go! Their commission is horrible, but Poshmark makes it very easy to sell an item and it works with you to help you sell! I currently have both apps installed in my phone and I am hoping that Mercari can step up its game and be a little more seller-friendly and easier to use.

If you don’t already have Poshmark, download the app and use code ‘HSNQH’ to receive $5 off your first purchase! I sell so many items that I feature in my Lady Code fashion posts on Poshmark, so make sure you check out my closet as well if you love Lady Code’s style: https://poshmark.com/closet/lisaopie 🙂

  1. Excellent review! I love both sites for different things. 🙂 Mercari is my favorite, but Poshmark seems to have more people looking specifically for what I sell.

PS If anyone wants $10 off at Poshmark, sign up with Poshmark’s app using JBXCY!

  2. I have mercari and I do like it so far, I love how affordable items are,. Except for the brand Melville items. I see people selling brandy clothing even more expensive that what it initially retails for, not only that but people selling that brand can be very offensive if you politely ask for a better deal,. Other than that I find it very convenient that you are not charged any fees and you can offer free shipping. I am a seller but also a buyer so free shipping is awesome, ! Plus I also want to offer the best deals, as I would also want to find 🙂 here’s a code if you guys want to give it a try and get $2 off 🙂 happy shopping GMJPWT

  3. Thanks for this great comparison. I recently started using Poshmark and saw comments from others about Mercari, so I signed up for that one, too. One thing I like about Poshmark that wasn’t mentioned — maybe because I’m a little older and still use my laptop more than my mobile device — is that you can buy things from both the website and app versions of the site. Unless I’m missing something, that feature isn’t available on Mercari.

  4. I really enjoyed this blog/website comparison!!
I currently sell on Posh & Ebay. Posh has GREAT Customer Service! I don’t like the 20% commission from Posh. 13% commission Ebay takes including PayPal. Posh also charges 5.95 now for shipping, which I think deters some people.
I am thinking about listing my listings on Mercari, but I read the app reviews and got worried about the customer service. People deleting their accounts, customer support being slow&stupid.
On the app reviews I noticed Posh responded to their reviews, but Mercari didn’t (care!)
I am trying to decide if I should try and spend time, then have a bad experience, and if it is worth it!!!

  5. Poshmark: Share your listings several times per day. Only your FOllowERS can see your shared listing. The more followers you have = the more people who see your shared listing.
Except: If others share your listing = their followers can see your listing == hence “social app”.
Except: You share your listing at the 10:00pm party then anyone can see your shared listing.
So share others listing = they may share yours.
Must have a large list of followERS!!!
Except: Join Share Groups = you share theirs > They have to share yours.

Mercari: still trying to figure out how it works. Help. B

  7. I LOVE Poshmark and have made a ton of money with it! I tried Mecari and didn’t make any sales. I still have the app, but I haven’t listed anything again. It’s very cluttered and overwhelming to use at times. I find Poshmark much easier to use and Ive also found their customer service to be very helpful the few times I’ve needed help with something. I’m a Poshmark girl for sure! Yes, they take a larger amount of your sale money, but personally I find it to be worth it because I’ve had such great success buying, selling & even trading on this app! I also love the option to make offers or negotiate prices. I’m crazy about Poshmark! Love it!

  9. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Poshmark! I made 4 sales yesterday! I have been considering downloading the Mercari app to sell some of my larger ticket items like Valentino shoes, Manolo Blanik, Tory Burch etc. and this article gives me a good idea of what to expect. It would be nice not to have to pay such a hefty commission, but I do agree that Poshmark’s customer service and general platform makes it oh-so-easy to post and sell on their app. I’ve had such fun merchandising and selling my items. Would you believe that I make a mortgage payment each month with my poshmark earnings? Not bad, huh?!
To get a $5.00 bonus for signing up, please use my code: PHUKQ (funny code, I know!) That’s $5.00 FREE! And don’t forget to shop my closet @hmclaren! Share and like and I will return the LOVE!
